Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.

*Martin Luther King, Jr.

If you consciously open your heart to help one other person in compassion, as one equal and not better than, you have opened your heart to the whole world. Love is that simple.

The Kamakura Buddha was in a temple until a mighty storm brought the temple down. Then, for many years the huge statue stood exposed to sun and rain and wind, and the changes of weather.

When a priest began to raise funds to rebuild the temple, the statue appeared in a dream and said, "That temple was a prison, not a home. Leave me exposed to the ravages of life. That's where I belong."

*Anthony de Mello

Too often persons adopt a religious or spiritual tradition to escape the common life and world. Rather than being exposed to life, they want to be insulated from life. Jesus spoke on this matter. He says,in the Gospel of John 17.15-16:

I do not pray for You to remove them from the world, but that You would keep them from evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Earlier, in chaper 8, verse 12, the Jesus of the Gospel of John speaks:

I am the Light of the world. The person who follows me will not walk in darkness. That person shall have the Light of Life.

In the Gospel of John, the world takes on a meaning other than physical world. The Gospel refers to the world as the social systems alientated from the priorities of the Kingdom of God - these include love, joy, and peace. This "Kingdom" is not the church, or any religious system or institution.

All great spiritual Paths and Teachers show us the Light of Life. They embody That. We, in compassion, walk in the Light within the world, to serve compassionately. No, we are not “of” it, but we are in it and to be for it. That is the Way of Compassion.
